Room Planning 101: 3 Simple Steps to Creating a Beautiful and Functional Interior
When starting a new renovation project, it’s only normal to be excited about all the materials and finishes you will be putting into this space. You might have already picked out your colour palette! Well, you might be surprised to hear me say that the colour palette is not the first thing you should look at when planning your interior spaces. Here are my three simple steps to nailing your design and aesthetic!
1: Function First
You first need to ensure you have a list of what you need in your space to make it function. This might include things like storage, seating, natural light, a place to charge your devices, a place to work - the list goes on. It really helps if you can think about how you use your current space and what may or may not work for you, this will help guide you. It’s also important to consider what you might need out of this space for the next 10+ years. As the family grows its only normal for your needs to change, consider how you could incorporate these using a multifunctional design approach. This list will be the first thing you will look at when planning your room layout.
2: Space Planning
Then next crucial step is space planning out your room. Things to consider are furniture placement, orientation and sizes, flow from one room to the next, house orientation, room sizes, ventilation just to name a few. This is where your functions list comes into play. If you are renovating or adding on an extension you are already investing a lot of money into your home, you need to invest time into the planning phase to ensure you are spending your investment on the right things.
3: Material and Finish Selection
Once you have your layout sorted it’s time to move on to the fun part! This is when you can start to curate a colour palette and inspiration board of your look and feel. You can move onto this step knowing that you have ticked all of your functionality boxes and your space is going to work for you for the next 10+ years.
