Style Guide: How to Define your Design Style
It can be hard to put a label on your design style. Generally, people like a mix of a couple of different styles so when you try and label your style it can become confusing. I work together with my clients to determine their style and I thought I would run through a little bit of my process. I have broken it down below.
Inspiration
When working with my clients one of the first things we discuss is their inspiration and what they would like to achieve in their space.I start by having them select 20-30 inspirational images from places like Pinterest and Instagram.
Likes
Once we have these images I go through each image and ask the client what they like about the images. This might be the materials, colours, artwork style, décor pieces, feature wall or the feel of the space.
Dislikes
I then ask them what they don’t like which is just as important! They might like timber but dislike dark timber which can highly impact the overall design and style.
Style
Once we have discussed this in detail, I can then get an idea of the design style they like or if it’s a mix of styles. I will use this information to create a mood board for the look and feel we are aiming for in their space.
Using these tips, you will be able to get an idea of the types of styles you like and you can then start to narrow down your materials, finishes and colour palette from here.
