Common Design Mistakes: 3 Tips to Avoid Them!
All too often I see the same common styling mistakes being made. With a little guidance and some tips and tricks these mistakes can be avoided!
Mistake 1. Buying all your accessories in one place
Have you ever walked into someones home and felt like you have just walked into a particular homewares store? Purchasing all your decor from one store is not the way to achieve a personalised look in your home. It can be tempting to purchase pieces because they are on cheap or they looked good in your friends house when you visited them over the weekend.
Tip: Curate your items from a range of places, choosing only pieces you love or make a connection with. This could include purchasing from multiple homewares stores, Up cycling, creating your own original pieces, buying from op shops, markets, or places while you are travelling. The options are endless if you get a bit creative! This will ensure your home is unique to your personality and full of things you love. Mix the old with the new to create interest in your home and avoid it feeling like a display home.
Mistake 2. No personal touches
Minimalism is always on trend. Having a clean, decluttered and organised home is at the top of most people’s lists when it comes to home styling. Have you ever walked into someone home and thought it was beautifully decorated but if didn't know the person you wouldn't know who lived there?
Tip: Adding your personal touches through the decor and accessories is so important in creating that connection within your home and making it feel homely. This could include adding family photos and objects you have collected on holiday, things that you love or things that resemble memories you have made over the years.
Mistake 3. Buying things because someone else has them, they are cheap or just to "fill" a space in your home
This is a mistake I see a lot. You’re scrolling through social media and you see a homewares item used in someone else's home and it looks great! You go and get that exact same item and when you get home you find yourself moving it from room to room trying to find a place for it. For some reason it doesn't look the way it looked in that other person’s house and you decide owell it was cheap it will do until you find something else.
Tip: Never buy something that someone else loves or you think will look nice in your house because it looked nice in theirs. Look at your space and workout what you need, think about your colour palette and what materials YOU love. Don't rush into buying something just to fill the empty space, wait until you find something you love and that makes a connection with your personality. Make purchases with thought rather than impulse buying without thinking it through.
If you follow these tips, you be able to create your very own, beautiful unique home true to your personality.
